Lindum turfs Trafalgar Square

Stephen Fell on the turfed Trafalgar SquareTwo thousand square metres of turf grown in the Vale of York by Lindum arrived in London in May to cover Trafalgar Square, transforming one of the capital city’s most iconic attractions into “London’s village green”.

The village green was created for just two days as part of Visit London’s Villages Campaign organised by Visit London to promote the city as a diverse collection of villages and one of the greenest capitals in the world.

During the event people visiting Trafalgar Square were able to take advantage of the green space to have a picnic or just soak up the atmosphere and relax in a deckchair.

This is the second time Lindum, based in Thorganby, near York, has supplied turf for Trafalgar Square, having rolled out a temporary tennis court last year for top tennis stars, Tim Henman and Boris Becker to play on.

Stephen Fell, Managing Director, Lindum said: “It was really exciting to be involved in a project like this.  The whole mood of the square changed by covering it with grass and it encouraged people to stop, sit and picnic, much as they would in a London park.  It really highlighted the contribution that grass can make in transforming urban spaces, even if it was only on a temporary basis on this occasion.”

After the event, the turf was lifted and transported to Bishops Park in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, where it was planted beneath an avenue of majestic plane trees close to the River Thames and Fulham Palace.
